Some Things to Do in New Orleans for Mardi Gras

By Michael Barrera (

A few ideas for those of you partying in New Orleans this Mardi Gras Season (more to come):

1). Cafe au Lait & Beignets at Cafe Du Mond (Jackson Square by the river. If you ask anyone in Jackson Square they’ll point you there).

2). Hurricanes at Pat O’Brien’s Courtyard Bar: (The entrance is on St. Peter Street between Bourbon and Royal. You must stop in here for at least one Hurricane. You can take your second one to go.

3). Craps Tables at Harrah’s Casino: The pit bosses are nice and explain the rules to you clearly. Also, the drinks are free at the tables and slots.

4) Live Music and Dancing on Bourbon Street and Frenchmen Street: Walk all the way down Bourbon Street stopping to pop into bars with bands that catch your ear. And don’t forget that you can take your drinks “To Go”, which means that if you are ready for the next band/bar you just pour your drink into a To Go Cup and walk out the bar to the streets with your drink in hand. Try to make it all the way to Frenchmen Street for probably the best music scene in New Orleans. Best bars on Frenchmen are: DBA, Spotted Cat, Blue Nile, Mojitos, Checkpoint Charlie, and the Apple Barrel Bar.

5). Art Galleries: New Orleans has amazing hidden gems throughout the French Quarter and other neighborhoods. Find your favorite, little hidden spot and chat up the artists for more recommendations nearby. The art galleries here are fun places to go in with a beer and chat up the locals.

Also on the things I’d like to try are the Ghost Tours (supposedly they are actually pretty cool). I’ll write with more ideas as they come to me, but I just wanted to start planting a few seeds.
